Your Newborn: From First Breath to Five Years

"Jab tumne pehli baar unhe pakda — woh chota sa haath tumhari ungli ke girde lapet gaya. Aur uss lamhe mein — duniya ruk gayi. Aur tumhara dil — kuch aisa bana jo pehle kabhi na tha."
There is nothing in this world like a newborn baby. The weight of them in your arms. The smell of their head — that inexplicable, perfect smell that makes your brain flood with love before you even understand what is happening.
They are the most vulnerable creatures on earth. And you are responsible for them entirely. It is the most beautiful, terrifying truth of parenthood.
The First 24 Hours — The Golden Hours
Skin to Skin: The Most Important Thing You Can Do
The moment your baby is born — if both of you are stable — ask for immediate skin-to-skin contact. Place your bare baby on your bare chest. This one act does more for your baby in the first hour than anything else:
- Regulates body temperature — better than any hospital warmer
- Stabilises heart rate and breathing immediately after birth
- Initiates the breastfeeding instinct — babies crawl to the nipple on their own
- Releases oxytocin in both mother and baby — the bonding hormone
- Reduces your baby's stress hormones dramatically
- Begins the colonisation of beneficial bacteria from your skin
In many Pakistani hospitals, babies are taken away immediately for cleaning and weighing. You have the right to ask for skin-to-skin first. The weighing can wait. The golden hour cannot be recaptured.
Feeding Your Newborn — The First Decision
What Is Colostrum and Why It Matters
Your milk does not come in immediately. What comes first is colostrum — a thick, golden, concentrated fluid sometimes called 'liquid gold.' It is packed with antibodies, proteins, and everything your newborn's immune system needs to build its first defences against the world.
Colostrum comes in tiny amounts — just drops — and many Pakistani mamas panic, thinking they have no milk. You do. Your baby's stomach at birth is the size of a marble. Drops are enough.
💛 Mama Tip: Feed on demand — not on a schedule. A newborn may want to feed 10–12 times in 24 hours. This is not low milk supply — this is how supply is built. Every feed is a signal to your body to produce more.
🍼 FirstBreath Recommends: Anti-Colic Feeding Bottle Set (3-Pack) — if you supplement with formula or exclusively pump, these BPA-free anti-colic bottles reduce gas and colic by mimicking the flow of breastfeeding.

Your Newborn's Body — What Is Normal
Things That Look Alarming But Are Completely Normal
- Baby acne (milk spots) in the first weeks — do not squeeze, do not apply creams
- Jaundice (pailia) in days 2–5 — common, needs monitoring, usually resolves naturally
- Crossed or wandering eyes — normal until 3–4 months as eye muscles develop
- The soft spot (fontanelle) on the head — closes naturally between 12–18 months
- Constant sneezing — not a cold. Newborns clear their airways by sneezing
- Cradle cap on the scalp — harmless, treat with gentle baby oil massage
- No tears when crying — tear ducts are not active until 2–3 weeks of age
Things That Need Immediate Medical Attention
- Fever above 38°C in a baby under 3 months — this is an emergency, go immediately
- Not feeding for more than 4 hours, difficulty waking to feed
- Blue or purple colouration of lips or fingernails
- Difficulty breathing — grunting, nostrils flaring, ribs visible with each breath
🌡️ FirstBreath Recommends: Electric Baby Nasal Aspirator — Pakistan's climate means baby congestion is almost guaranteed. This hospital-grade electric aspirator clears blocked noses in seconds, gently and safely, with 3 suction levels.

What Your Baby's Skin Actually Needs
A newborn's skin is 30% thinner than adult skin. It absorbs everything you put on it. In Pakistan, the traditions of mustard oil massage, ubtan, and kajal are beloved — but some need to be questioned.
- Kajal in the eyes: can contain lead compounds. Ophthalmologists advise strongly against it for newborns
- Mustard oil: high erucic acid content linked to skin inflammation in some babies — use sparingly
- Strong spice-based ubtan: can irritate extremely delicate newborn skin
This is not about abandoning tradition. It is about choosing the safest expression of that love for your baby's specific and delicate needs.
💛 Mama Tip: For newborn massage use cold-pressed coconut oil or a specially formulated baby oil — no mineral oil, no parabens, no artificial fragrance. Your baby's skin absorbs everything. Choose pure.
🌿 FirstBreath Recommends: Organic Herbal Baby Oil + Zinc Oxide Diaper Rash Cream — a cold-pressed, halal-certified, dermatologist-tested duo for complete skin protection from Day 1.
